Rolling and icing a cake using fondants sometimes can be TIRING. Firstly, you'll colour, rolled and kneading them until it is pliable. Sometimes when you smooth the fondant over the cake there will be elephant skin, cracks and crevices. When my fondant cracks, normally, i'll redo the process of covering the cake again and again and again.
I did few organic search from Mr. Google and found a page by Erica O'Brien that shares solution to all your cracks. She mentioned about ' Gunge Technique'. If you stumble upon imperfection icing your cake Grunge-ing is the remedy. Imperfection can be caused by nail marks, scratches and even cutting your fondant shorter than you've hope for. Here are the steps that you can follow:
Elephant Skins or Nail Marks

1st Step: Take a small portion of the same fondant paste and place in a cup

2nd Step: Dilute the fondant with a teaspoon of warm water

3rd Step: Make sure to incorporate water and fondant becoming a paste like consistency. You can you use paint palette knives or small butter knife.

4th Step: Swipe a very generous amount to the cracks and allow them to set until dry.

Finale stage:

There you have it. Hopefully this tip might help you icing any fondant cakes in the future. Good luck!!!
